PROMOTING NORDIC ART HISTORY

We are happy to launch Nordic Institute of Art (NIA), as an organisation with the mission to stimulate research and promotion of historical and modern art from the Nordic countries in an international context. In addition to its work with Nordic art history, NIA also aims at fostering interest and expertise in other key areas of art history, such as European 19th century and overseas art, as well as to explore and map lesser known aspects of art history, and create international connections for the domestic art scene.

Through its unique expertise and network, the Institute organises exhibitions, seminars, lectures and other events. Central to the institute´s remit is also to produce monographs, catalogues raisonnés and other academic publications. The program focuses on art from ca. 1800 and up to the post-war period.

“Our vision is to write Nordic art into the canon of World art history.”  says Founding Director of NIA, Dr. Knut Ljøgodt: "We attempt also to shed light on lesser know aspects of art history, and thorugh exhibitions and publications bring these to the attention a domestic and international audience."

The Institute is overseen in academic and strategic matters by an Advisory Board, consisting of highly profiled art historians with great expertise and interest within NIA’s mission:
